Waterspout spotted near Island

A waterspout was spotted on Monday morning to the south of Ferry Point by Shaun Jones as he travelled on the ferry to St George around 11am.

Ferry passengers were surprised by a distant waterspout while travelling to St George’s this week. However Monday morning’s event was actually a common summertime occurrence, meteorologist Jeff Torgerson explained.“We had some development of towering cumulus, which is just a vertical development in our cloud field. When we get the vertical development in clouds we do tend to get the development of funnel clouds. It’s just a simple summertime instability.”Waterspouts form when the funnels reach the surface of the ocean. Mr Torgerson said they generally only pose a threat if there is a boater in the immediate vicinity or if they reach land, becoming a tornado.
