Ferry passengers were surprised by a distant waterspout while travelling to St George’s this week. However Monday morning’s event was actually a common summertime occurrence, meteorologist Jeff Torgerson explained.“We had some development of towering cumulus, which is just a vertical development in our cloud field. When we get the vertical development in clouds we do tend to get the development of funnel clouds. It’s just a simple summertime instability.”Waterspouts form when the funnels reach the surface of the ocean. Mr Torgerson said they generally only pose a threat if there is a boater in the immediate vicinity or if they reach land, becoming a tornado.
