Opportunity knocks again for Toronto-bound Russell

Bermuda international Antwan Russell (left) has been invited back for a second trial at Toronto FC.

Antwan Russell is set to join up with Bermuda team-mates Reggie Lambe and Freddy Hall when he returns to Toronto FC for a two-week training stint.Russell is hoping to become the third Islander to sign for the Canadian outfit who have suffered a disappointing season and sit bottom of the Eastern Conference. The 25-year-old spent a week training with Toronto in August and is understood to have impressed head coach Paul Mariner who wants another look at the pacey striker before the end of the season. He had been due to fly to Toronto yesterday but his tryout has now been delayed until the weekend when Mariner returns from the UK where he attended his father’s funeral.Paul Scope, who also recommended Lambe and Hall to Toronto, believes Russell has the raw potential to make the grade in the MLS if he applies himself.“I expect Paul will be looking to change his squad quite a bit given where they are in the table and maybe there will be an opportunity for Antwan,” said Scope, who is a close friend of Mariner. “He still has some rough edges but that’s what makes him an aggressive striker.”A slight concern for Russell could be his lack of competitive football. He hasn’t played since the national team’s Digicel Cup campaign last month after his move from PHC to Robin Hood missed the transfer deadline.Scope expressed he was disappointed that “certain individuals” at the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) put their club interests ahead of helping Russell further his football career.“Obviously I will try to do the best for Antwan or any other Bermuda player,” said Scope, an former Robin Hood president. “I’ve helped guys like Reggie and Freddy who are never going to play for Robin Hood. I’ll help players who show the right character and willingness no matter who they play for.“I’m upset that a technicality has prevented Antwan from playing so far this season. I sent an e-mail out to several people (at the BFA) who always respond when they want something from the Hogges, but they didn’t respond and the deadline went past. Despite an appeal he can’t play for us until November.“Sadly due to the system in Bermuda, and certain individuals who seem more interested in being parochial to their clubs than the bigger picture, we have Antwan not playing.“It would have been so useful for him to have played those games before his trial at Toronto. He’s even turned out to Lock N Key in the Corona League but I’m frightened he’ll get injured, so it’s best to get him up to Toronto sooner rather than later.”Scope said it’s more than likely that Russell will be invited head back to Toronto for pre-season training in the new year to step up his push for a professional contract.“Unless Paul (Mariner) says to me after the two-week period they want Antwan and therefore don’t want him playing club football in Bermuda, then he will never play for Robin Hood.“More likely Paul will invite him back for pre-season when Antwan will have to compete with everybody else.“Paul said to me (after Antwan’s last trial) was that he wanted him playing as many games as possible to get sharp but sadly that hasn’t happen he could have played four games for the Hood by now.“When Antwan returns to Bermuda in November he will have two months to get fit, play for the Hood, and he’ll know what he needs to do.”Russell’s trial with Toronto is a direct result of the burgeoning relationship between the Bermuda Hogges and the Canadian club.Toronto take on Canadian rivals Montreal Impact in their final home game of the season on Saturday.
