Best still to come Darrell

Hall of Fame boxer Troy Darrell believes the best is yet to come from WBA middleweight champ Teresa Perozzi. The former professional middleweight boxer helped prepare Perozzi for her recent WBC and WBA middleweight unification championship bout with Tori Nelson and is largely credited for curbing the southpaw’s aggressive instincts and polishing her ring craft.“Teresa has the heart but now I want her to have the skills because boxing is an art and she needs to go out there and perfect the art more,” Darrell said.“Teresa is a strong girl and has the will and now she has to have the tools to do what she needs to do.”Darrell has agreed to work with Perozzi on a long-term basis.“We have already discussed this and the plan is to kick back for a couple of weeks and then begin working with Troy again,” Perozzi said.Veteran trainer Allen (Forty) Rego believes Darrell can take Perozzi’s career to the next level.“Troy has done a wonderful job with Teresa and I’ve never seen her box like that before,” he said. “Troy knows what he’s doing and it’s showing in Teresa’s training.”Darrell was impressed to see Perozzi exercise some of the techniques the pair had worked on in the lead-up to last Saturday’s ‘All or Nothing’ show at Fairmont Southampton.“I thought Teresa fought a good fight considering the time I had to work with her,” he said. “She showed her ability what we have been working on Saturday night but now we just have to fine tune a few things.“Teresa didn’t stick to the plan 100 percent. But sometimes you need more time to really get it down and if I had her longer maybe she would’ve been more tuned in with it. Sometimes when you get tired or hit you go back to what you know.”Darrell believes Perozzi won the ten-round thriller with Nelson.“I thought she fought good enough to edge Nelson out,” he said. “Nelson was falling all over herself and Teresa definitely outboxed this girl to earn more respect from the boxing world.“If Teresa had a thousand fans before this fight she now has five thousand because she showed the ring craft and showed she can take a punch. Teresa looked like she knew what she was doing out there and she made Nelson look bad when she was boxing her.”Darrell said Perozzi’s only downfall in her recent bout with Nelson was allowing herself to be lured into a slugfest.“Nelson wanted a knockout so I didn’t want Teresa to stay there and slug with this girl,” he said. “I just wanted Teresa to outbox her and get her punches in, work the body and the uppercuts and use that jab and stay on the outside.“I wanted her to use the ring which was big enough but in the later rounds the girl caught up with her. Nelson hit her with some solid right hands and left hooks in the later rounds that might have excited the judges.“Nelson landed some good heavy punches in the later rounds and that’s where Teresa got away from the game plan. And the judges probably looked at that and felt that Teresa was fighting Nelson’s fight in the last rounds.”
