Tyler Kendall, Elijah Richardson and Krista Dyer all savoured victories representing a Bermuda Police Service boxing team in Canada.

The three formed part of a seven-strong team who pitted their skills in the ring against officers from the Peel Police at the Mississauga Convention Centre in Ontario

Police officer Kendall edged Graham McGregor, the minister of citizenship and multiculturalism of Brampton North, by way of the crowd vote to cap a memorable debut in the ring.

Richardson also prevailed in a close encounter with opponent Ash Dhiman via a split decision. Elite kickboxer Dyer then made it three wins for the touring team in another competitive bout against Brampton’s Nargis Sameh.

Ayesha Akbar, Shakti Khafra, Khalid Pitcher and Vincent Dunigan Jr also represented the Bermuda Police Service boxing team at the International Charity Boxing Gala, which was held to raise funds for Ontario based charity organisations Victim Services Toronto, ProAction COPS Kids and the JDASS Charitable Foundation.

Akbar lost by a split decision against opponent Laura Scott, Khafra and Pitcher both had their matches halted before the final bell battling against superior opponents, while Dunigan Jr had his match called off after his opponent failed the pre-fight medical check.

The Bermuda Police Service team were accompanied by coach and Bermuda Sanshou Association president Garon Wilkinson, who was pleased with the athlete’s showing.

“We had some outstanding performances by the winners Tyler Kendall, Elijah Richardson and Krista Dyer. Ayehsa Akbar also had a very strong showing and as her regular coach I was very proud to witness,” Wilkinson told The Royal Gazette.

“We trained for months and put the athletes through a training camp as I do all my athletes for any other competition, and it was amazing to see what some of them had done from day one as the majority of them had never had any fight experience.

“I was really proud to have the opportunity to lead the Bermuda Police Service boxing team.

“Police Boxing Gym has been a staple of Bermuda boxing for many years. In fact, my first ever full contact fight in Bermuda was at a Bermuda Police event in 2005, so it was a bit nostalgic to have the opportunity to many years later come back as a coach of the Bermuda Police Service boxing team.

“It was a very well organised event. Peel Police were very hospitable and overall it was a very good trip.”

The international charity event was held on September 3.
