Appeal goes out to knit for Sandy victims

Knitting for the needy: Oneka Benn Schwartz, Jennifer Johnson-Porter, and Louisa Swayne get busy knitting warm cloths for the needy in New York following Hurricane Sandy.

A New Yorker living in Bermuda is calling on local knitters to help her make life a little warmer for Hurricane Sandy victims.Jennifer Johnson Porter is hoping residents volunteer to help make gloves, blankets and scarves to send to affected people on the East Coast.“It will make people think of others rather then themselves,” she said. “When we left New York last year it was Hurricane Irene, but luckily she blew by, and then with Leslie and now Sandy, I know what they are feeling after experiencing hurricanes firsthand here in Bermuda.”Mrs Johnson Porter recently started a knitting circle “just for fun”; she previously knitted for business magnate Martha Stewart’s company.“I thought it would be a good thing to help those who need help given my knitting experience,” she said. “I can knit quickly and I’m sure there are people in the community that can knit as well, and they can help.“People in Bermuda know what it’s like to go through a hurricane and we can get some blankets and whatever else people can knit to those who are struggling right now.”The items will be shipped to pre-arranged shelters in order to be sent out efficiently rather than to those organisations that might store them in a warehouse for later use, she said.“I want to get the items we make into people’s hands to show that there is someone out there trying to help you,” Mrs Johnson Porter added. “Bermudians are known to help others. If we can’t give them water, toilet paper, gas, we can still help them get through a rough time.“It is extremely important to do things like this because if the shoe were on the other foot people would be looking for help from someone, so it has to be a give and take with this.”Contact Mrs Johnson Porter via e-mail:jenniferjporter@gmail.com
