Toronto keeper Hall determined to keep his number one jersey

Bermuda goalkeeper Freddy Hall is aiming to be Toronto FC’s number one next season.

Toronto FC goalkeeper Freddy Hall has vowed to fight for the number one jersey and repay the faith shown in him by coach Paul Mariner. The 27-year-old ended last season as Mariner’s preferred option after displacing Milos Kosic and is confident he can remain first choice shot stopper.Hall, who is in talks over a new contract, knows he faces a renewed battle to remain between the sticks with fit-again Stefan Frei vying to reclaim his starting berth.“The manager really showed faith in me and that showed in the amount of games I played last season,” said Hall, who made 11 appearances for Toronto.“We’re in (contract) negotiations right now and hopefully everything will be sorted in the next few weeks so I can be ready for preseason.“The keeper who was number one got injured last season but he’s coming back, so I’m definitely going to be fighting for that jersey.“We’ll both start off on a level playing field, that’s the way it is with Paul (Mariner) the best man will play.”Since turning professional at a relatively late age, Hall has been tutored by some of the biggest names in the business in ex-England international Tim Flowers at Northampton Town, and Toronto’s keeper coach Stewart Kerr, formerly of Celtic. He said both Flowers and Kerr had helped develop his game while admitting the transition from the amateur to professional level had been a shock to the system.“I’ve had a few years being a pro and really didn’t take into the consideration the amount of challenges you face, both on and off the field,” said the former St George’s man.“You definitely have to grow a lot and I definitely feel as though I have grown from these experiences.“Both Stewart Kerr and Tim Flowers have helped me tremendously in different ways, with me being new to the professional ranks.“Working with Stew is amazing because he’s more about finding the little details to improve my game and I feel like I’m getting better all the time.”When Hall joined Toronto midway through the season he found a familiar face in the dressing in Bermuda team-mate Reggie Lambe, who had signed for the Canadian outfit a few months previously.“It most definitely helped having Reg there, it made it a lot easier,” said Hall, who made three appearances for Northampton during the 2010-11 season.“We get on well on and off the field and it’s been fun having, like, a little brother there.”He added: “I’m just relaxing right now but I’m working hard to maintain my fitness and have a rigorous offseason workout plan.“I would say that the travel aspect of the MLS is very demanding. I didn’t really take into consideration how much wear and tear consistently flying takes on your body.”Hall is likely to be joined in preseason by Robin Hood striker Antwan Russell who has been invited to return to BMO Field in January after impressing during a recent trial.
