BIHA open new rink

Bermuda Inline Hockey Association (BIHA) will celebrate the opening of their new skating rink at Pembroke Community Club today. The official 2pm opening will be the culmination of several months’ work and the realisation of a dream to honour Tom MacNeil who was President of the Bermuda Roller Hockey League (now known as the BIHA).In April of 2008, in response to MacNeil’s sudden death, a memorial fund was established with a goal of raising money for a rink expansion and improvements.“MacNeil’s enthusiasm and vision for the league and the facilities have inspired those involved with the association,” said BIHA’s Maribeth Anderson. The programme has been running since then from October to March each year, enrolling over 120 children each year with a portion of the proceeds from the registration fee going to the PCC.The fundraising scheme Skate for Tom, Realise the dream saw almost 100 skaters from the league taking part the May 24 Half-Marathon Derby.Mike Daly and Mark Hientzman have been true driving force behind the rebuilding of the rink.“The PCC have been supportive of this initiative and without club there would not be an appropriate venue to support this project,” said Anderson .“The opening ceremonies will take place at 2pm with a few words from the organisers and an official ribbon cutting with Minister Michael Scott in attendance.”News and updates on the Bermuda Inline Hockey Association can be found on www.brhl.bm.
