More young people see the worth in volunteering
More than 100 volunteers were honoured this year at the 7th Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception held at the Ace Building.
The reception also marked the last official event for the Centre on Philanthropys executive director Pamela Barit Nolan, who steps down on December 31.
The event is part of National Volunteer Day celebrations hosted each year to raise awareness and show gratitude for the impact that volunteers have in Bermuda.
This year there were 71 adult and 30 youth volunteers recognised by 72 charities.
What we are particularly pleased with is the increase in youth volunteers recognised this year, said Ms Barit Nolan. It shows that our young people are learning to give through the gift of time and we are thrilled that non-profit are providing opportunities for Bermudas youth to give back.
The Centres chairman, Brian Madeiros added: Volunteers do such important work and we are honoured by the chance to honour them. It sounds cliché, but where would we be without them?
His comments were echoed by Deputy Governor David Arkley who also spoke at the reception which was also attended by Minister of Government Estates and Information Michael Scott.
The Volunteer Recognition Reception was also the final public event for Ms Barit Nolan, who has been with The Centre since 2005.
This celebration has become one of my favourite events over the last seven years, she said.
Each year the volunteers are so inspirational and the environment full of care, compassion and gratitude. But I will be continuing as a proud member of The Centre on Philanthropy and the next time Im at a Centre event I will have on a volunteer shirt rather than a staff shirt — who knows, maybe I will even get nominated one year!
