Island given top grade in US report on money-laundering, terror financing

Bermuda has been placed in the lowest risk category for money laundering and terrorist financing in a recent US report. The 2013 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report expressed no concerns about the Island after reviewing Bermuda’s legislative and operational framework.Senator Jeff Baron, Junior Minister for Legal Affairs, said the report placed 200 countries and jurisdictions into three categories: Jurisdictions of Primary Concern, Jurisdictions of Concern and Other Jurisdictions Monitored.Bermuda was placed in the last category, indicating the lowest degree of risk for money laundering and terrorist financing.“This Government is committed to playing its role in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, and is working with industry partners and others to protect our borders against those who would seek to use them to commit these nefarious crimes,” Sen Baron said.He said that work is already underway to further strengthen and enhance the existing regime, including a National Risk Assessment which began in January.“Bermuda will continue its commitment to enhancing and updating our framework to ensure that it is effective, and in line with national standards,” Sen Baron said.“The work will be done in accordance with our National Action Plan to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.“In doing so, Bermuda will preserve its strong reputation within the international community and play its part to safeguard the security and stability of the global financial network.”
