National team head coach Andrew Bascome will take charge of the Bermuda Hogges this season, the team’s owner Paul Scope has confirmed.Bascome, who was appointed Bermuda’s head coach last summer, replaces ex-Hogges boss Maurice lowe who no longer remains part of the the BFA coaching set-up.With the BFA extending a three-year agreement that will see them continue to have full control of Hogges’ on-the-pitch matters, Bascome has in essence inherited the Premier Development League outfit.The former Robin Hood coach will assisted by National Academy director Richard Todd who worked with Bascome when he was head coach at then Premier Division side Boulevard in 2008.Scope believes the respected coaching duo will be a good fit for the Hogges, whose season starts on May 31 against Reading United at Goose Gosling Field.“I’ve met with Richard and Andrew about the Hogges and they are very keen do it,” said Scope.“It’s my understanding that the senior (national team) coaches will take the team this season and we hope to be very competitive.“Andrew is a winner and I’ve obviously had a relationship with him from when he coached the Robin Hood.“It was me that brought Andrew to the Hood; I’m a big admirer and fan of his coaching methods.“I’m also a big admirer of Richard Todd — he did a very good job at St George’s and is very well organised, and we have a good rapport right now.”Scope revealed that Dennis Brown, who led Devonshire Cougars to the Triple Crown this season, could also be part of the Hogges’ coaching team.“I think Dennis Brown might also be getting involved. I don’t know that for sure but I would obviously welcome that.“I worked with Dennis at Somerset for four seasons so I would be delighted and delirious if Dennis, Richard and Andrew were working with the Hogges this season.”The Hogges season will serve as valuable preparation for the host nation’s NatWest Island Games campaign, according to Scope, who has ensured there are no scheduling conflicts between club and country.“The Hogges training will be done by the national team coaches and they will basically use the same players as the base for the Island Games team,” said Scope, who also serves on the Bermuda Games committee.“I know Richard and Andrew were happy I was able to get the Hogges schedule to dovetail into the Island Games. I’m involved intimately in the Island Games, so I was aware of the dates before I went to the (United Soccer Leagues) AGM and designed the Hogges regular season fixtures to end just before the Games ... the (PDL) play-offs start just after the Games.”One scheduling conflict Scope must iron out is Hogges visit to Westchester Flames that clashes with the national team’s friendly against the touring England ‘C’ side.Bermuda are due to play England ‘C’ — a select team made up of English non-league players — on July 4 at the National Sports Centre.“Unfortunately the England ‘C’ team can’t play the Bermuda Hogges as they have to play national teams, so that’s why it’s been done through the BFA,” Scope added.“It’s actually given me a scheduling headache because although the Hogges’ first two home games are perfect preparation for the England ‘C’ game, we were due to play on July 5 up in Westchester. I’ve alerted the league to say there will be an issue and will be reaching out to Westchester to see if we can tweak that fixture.”
