By Crystal HoldippCharity Project Action will be hosting a fundraiser this Cup Match to raise money to continue its services for the Island’s seniors and physically challenged.They will be collecting donations on Thursday and Friday at the St George’s Cricket Club from 9am to 6pm.Project Action provides free bus transportation (Island-wide) to seniors who are both in private and government housing. They provide special bus access to the physically challenged and the disabled. They also have two buses that they use to provide the transportation.Chairperson Cindy Swan said: “The purpose is to raise awareness about project action and to encourage support for the efforts of PA.“This new initiative we are looking forward to it being successful and it being an annual event to ensure our seniors and physically challenged can continue to receive the services free of charge.”Inmates from the prison farm designed, built and decorated two hand crafted wooden donation boxes, which have been decorated in St George’s and Somerset colours.Project Action was featured in the Bermuda Day Parade on May 24 and has held a Royal Tea Party in honour of Her Majesty’s 60th Coronation.She said: “Sometime ago when I was on the Board of Age Concern and Project Action came very close to not being able to operate because of financial constraints.“Brainstorming with Age Concern’s Director, Claudette Fleming, we came up with the idea of Project Action having a presence at Cup Match considering that the colours of the vehicles represent the spirit of Cup Match.”The organisers of the event are Rose Douglas, Cindy Swan and Marie Kent Smith. Ms Swan said: “We hope to raise the competitive spirit of Cup Match to include donating in their respective represented colour box.“We will have gingerbread and drink for any senior stopping by and if we can secure electricity, they may even be able to get a cup of tea.“We have generous volunteers from Bermuda Small Business and the Kappa Fraternity who are giving up their Cup Match celebrations time to do community charity work.”
