‘Entertainer’ Chipangama smashes record

The impressive Jordan Chipangama achieved his primary objective of “putting on a show” after storming to victory in the HSBC Bermuda Half-Marathon and smashing the course record in the process.
The defending champion finished in a time of 1hr 4min 21sec obliterating the previous fastest time of 1:04.27 set by Kenya’s Philip Koech in 2008.
It was 25-year-old’s second victory in as many days after triumphing in Saturday’s 10K race. Although pleased to etch his name in the annals of Bermuda Marathon Weekend history, Chipangama said that it was more important for him to entertain the spectators than break records.
“I was invited to Bermuda primarily for this race, so I wanted to show respect to the people and give them a show,” said Chipangama, who finished in 1:05:53 last year.
“This was not about me coming here and picking up the money. The people don’t care about me picking up the money; they want to see me put on a show and I have to give the show.
“There wasn’t much competition in the race, so I had to go by myself and keep the pace honest. Breaking a record is always a spectacular thing to do and obviously I’m pleased to do have done that. It’s going to be in the books that Jordan has it.
“It’s been a great weekend for me and I only wish it could last a bit longer. It’s been lovely to be part of it all.”
Sammy Kiplagat Cheptoo, 45, beat local runner Chris Estwanik in a fierce battle for second place, with the Kenyan finishing in 1:06:39. Estwanik’s time of 1:06:43 suggests that the five-times Bermuda Day Half-Marathon Derby champion is well on the road to recovery from the knee injury that kept him out of last May’s ace. “It was my second-best time on the course,” Estwanik said. “Not quite as fast as last year, but I was pleased with it.
“The knee held up pretty well, but about mile ten my left hamstring started cramping, which is indicative that I’m favouring my left side. I can’t complain; it was a battle for second place. [Cheptoo] and I literally ran together from mile five.
“We kept feeling each other out and he finally put one big move on me with about half an hour to go and broke me.” Four local runners finished in the top ten. Stephen Allen was sixth in 1:12.59, Jay Donawa seventh in 1:17.09 and the aptly named Nick Strong took ninth in 1:21.36.
Lauren Hagans, from Memphis, Tennessee, believes that she has finally put her lengthy injury nightmare behind her after crossing the finish line as the fastest female. The American has suffered from a string of injuries and illness during the past two years and only recently returned to competitive running.
“This was my first [Bermuda Marathon Weekend] for about four years,” the 27-year-old, who finished in 1:18:08, said. “I ran the Mile on Friday night, which was my first real healthy race for about two years. I had a bruised foot that just wouldn’t heal and then compensation injuries like the Achilles. Then I had bronchitis, so I’ve been out of the race circuit for a few years.
“I really didn’t know the other women in the race or how good they were. My intention was just to get in a good run and I just went with it.”
Lilian Mariita, of Kenya, was the second-fastest female in 1:22:4 finishing ahead of Ashley Estwanik, of Bermuda.Estwanik felt that she was on the verge of catching Mariita but simply ran out of time.
“I finished ahead of [Mariita] in the 10K and I thought I was reeling her in today,” Estwanik, who finished in 1:22:54, said. “She definitely knew I was coming. My time was about 1:30 slower than last year, but this year I’d done the Mile [twice] and 10K as well.
“I think my time was a good indicator that things are going well, as I want to do a good time at this year’s New York Half-Marathon.“It feels good to be third. Today I felt I showed the hard work I have been doing behind the scenes.”
