Burch encouraged by Texas showing

Good foundations: Burch was pleased with his performance in his first meet of the season in Austin, Texas

Roy-Allan Burch, Bermuda’s Olympic swimmer, said he feels content with his performance at the first meet of the season in Austin, Texas.

It was the first time that Burch had competed since making minor altercations to his strokes during the off-season.

The Bermudian, who competed in the 50 and 100?metres freestyle at the Arena Grand Prix, came seventh in the 50 A final, eighth in the 100 C final and picked up win in the 400 freestyle relay.

“I’m fairly happy with how the weekend went,” Burch said. “I was much happier with my morning performances [in the 100].

“My night performances showed that I was tired and beat up from training.

“I had also swam on the winning relay about ten minutes before my 100 free, which left me extremely tired. It was like doing a workout and I ended up shutting down pretty hard.”

Burch qualified fifth in the 50?metres preliminaries in 22.96sec, but could not reach that time in the A final, finishing seventh in 23.07. Nathan Adrian, of the United States, won the event in 21.89.

Burch was the 20th-fastest qualifier in the 100 free, finishing in 51.94, but his final time of 54.74 also showed fatigue, landing him seventh in the C final. Adrian won in 48.26.

The Swimmac Carolina-NC swim team that included Burch, Nick Thoman, Dax Hill and Cullen Jones hit the tape in 3min 24.58sec to win the relay. Burch performed his leg in 51.28sec.

“I’m ahead of where I have ever been in any season, so that is a very positive outlook,” Burch added.

“I was able to make some changes but will need to go back and work on a few more things to keep moving forward.

“The coaches were happy with my performances and I’m happy to be moving in the right direction going into the summer.”
