Huddersfield hoping for Wells impact

Raring to go: in-form striker Wells

Nahki Wells and his Huddersfield Town team-mates will look to return to winning ways when they take on Bournemouth at Dean Court in the Sky Bet Championship today.

Huddersfield have lost their last two outings against Queens Park Rangers in the league and Charlton Athletic in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Wells is in contention for a starting place for tonight’s match after being cup-tied at the weekend.

The 23-year-old, who signed for Huddersfield for a club-record fee of £1.3 million, has scored in his first two appearances for the team.

He netted the winner in a 1-0 home win against Millwall after coming off the bench on his debut and scored in Huddersfield’s 2-1 defeat away to Queens Park Rangers. Huddersfield have not won away since beating Grimsby Town 3-2 in the FA Cup on January 4, while Bournemouth are without a win in the league for more than a month.

Dean Court has proven to be a tough ground for Huddersfield, who have not won there in nearly seven years.

Wells has netted 17 goals in all competitions this season and will be looking to add to his tally to help his team to end a two-game losing skid.

Mark Robins, the Huddersfield manager, is delighted to have Wells available again. “You don’t pay that sort of money and not have him on the pitch,” Robins said. “He is chomping at the bit and has worked hard since QPR, even training on Saturday, to make sure that he is ready.”

As for Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat in the Cup by Charlton, Robins said: “It was a frustrating day. I have watched the game back and we played OK and created enough chances to win the game, but just didn’t take one.

“The goalkeeper has played well for them, but we were guilty of lacking composure and missing clear-cut chances.”

Robins has urged his players to put Saturday’s loss behind them. “We need to move on quickly because we need to get back to winning ways tomorrow night,” he said.

Huddersfield thrashed Bournemouth 5-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium in their first league meeting last August.

But Bournemouth, who at sixteenth are three places below Huddersfield in the Championship, are made of much sterner stuff these days, according to Robins.

“I saw Bournemouth play against Liverpool on Saturday and before that Watford, and they worked their socks off in both matches,” Robins said. “It will be a different proposition to the one we faced earlier in the season because they are playing a different style of football.”
