Wells backed to be fans’ favourite

Mark Robins, the Huddersfield Town manager, has no doubt that Nahki Wells will live up to expectations at John Smith’s Stadium.

The 23-year-old striker joined the Sky Bet Championship team last month for a club-record fee of £1.3 million, after a highly successful spell at Bradford City.

It did not take long for Huddersfield to start receiving a return on their investment, with Wells scoring the match-winner on his debut against Millwall and following that up with another, albeit in a losing cause, against Queens Park Rangers.

“Nahki came here and hit the ground running and I think he is capable of more,” Robins, the former Manchester United striker, said.

“He needs to learn more but the main thing is he has the capability to deliver on the field in terms of his mental capacity to learn as well as his ability.”

Wells, a former Dandy Town player, scored 53 goals in 76 appearances for Bradford.

“He is a natural goalscorer,” Robins added. “You look at the way he moves, he always tries to sniff out an opportunity or a chance and obviously he is aware of how the game is building up and where the ball is likely to go.

“He is certainly quick and sharp and his finishing is very good.

“He seems to move his feet quickly and pick the right finish more often than not. His anticipation is very good as well, which is a must for a goal scorer.

“He will adapt over a period of time to the partner that he plays with, as he did with James Hanson at Bradford City. He has got to do that with the players we have here like James Vaughan and Danny Ward. There are a number of other strikers that he has got to work to keep out of the side, and I anticipate that over a period of time he will be a real fans’ favourite and a top player for us.”

To reach his full potential Robins said it is essential for Wells to continue working hard and enjoy his football.

“He has all the attributes that you need to make a success in the game over here and he’s got the environment and the team to do it with,” Robins said.

“He is going to get opportunities here and I think he will thrive. He is just getting to know what the league is all about and while he is learning that there is no doubt he can still score goals. It is an ideal environment for him and he is also an ideal player for us to have to help us develop as well.

“As a club, we always try and bring in players who are going to make us better as a team, first and foremost, but also have a value and an asset on the field, and Nahki was certainly a player that fits the criteria for us.”
