The prospect of Nahki Wells partnering up top with James Vaughan, the former England Under-21 striker, has Huddersfield Town fans champing at the bit before today’s Sky Bet Championship encounter with Wigan Athletic at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Vaughan, Huddersfield’s leading goalscorer and the youngest player to score in the Premier League when he was at Everton, appears poised to rejoin Mark Robins’s squad from injury and suspension and link up with Wells for the first time since the Bermudian signed with the West Yorkshire outfit for a club-record fee last month.

If given a run-out, today will mark only Wells’s second appearance at the John Smith’s Stadium since his arrival, having scored on his club and Championship debut on January 10 in a 1-0 win over Millwall. It was the perfect start to the latest chapter in his career and he bagged another a week later in a 2-1 loss away to Queens Park Rangers.

But the goals have dried up since, which does not sit all too well with the 23-year-old, who is keen to add to his 17 goals this season and to help Huddersfield snap a four-game losing streak in all competitions.

“As a striker, you want to score every game,” Wells said. “I am very excited to play in front of the home fans again; I haven’t played there since my debut.”

Wigan have lost only once in their past 12 matches, while Huddersfield have lost three times in the league at home this term. Wigan won the first league encounter 2-1 at DW Stadium last November, since which Owen Coyle has been sacked as manager. Uwe Rosler, the former Brentford manager, took over in December and has led them on their best run since the FA Cup was won last season under the stewardship of Roberto Martinez, which included a 4-1 win away to Huddersfield in the fifth round.

“We are a much better attacking team and concede far less at home,” Wells said. “We usually outplay teams at home. It will be a good football match with two sides who like to play good football.”

Huddersfield, who suffered a heavy 5-1 loss away to Leeds United in West Yorkshire derby during their previous league outing, will play four of their next five matches at home. After today’s clash they will host promotion-chasing Nottingham Forest, then two teams fighting to avoid the drop to League One — Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley.

“We have our run of consecutive home matches and need to play well and start picking up points again,” Wells added. “I am very confident that we can do well in the next few fixtures we have coming up at home.”

Also available from injury for today are midfielder Jonathan Hogg, defender Joel Lynch and Peter Clarke, the Huddersfield captain.

“It has been tough to play three consecutive matches away, but I am sure the return of some important players will give us a lift and we can hit the road again and chase that pack in front of us,” Wells said.
