Wells urges team-mates to build on victory

Developing game: Wells

Nahki Wells and his Huddersfield Town team-mates will be hoping for a second straight win when they face Nottingham Forest in the Sky Bet Championship at the John Smith’s Stadium today.

A 1-0 win against Wigan Athletic at the weekend brought to a halt Huddersfield’s four-game losing streak and should give Wells and his team-mates confidence heading into their game against high-flying Forest.

“That win takes the pressure off of us going into Tuesday night,” Wells said.

“The atmosphere will be great and the fans buzzing because we are coming off a win against a tough Wigan team.”

With the league campaign approaching the business end, Wells understands the importance of gathering as many points as possible, especially playing at home, where Huddersfield have lost only three times in the league this season.

“We have to come out believing we can beat them and I think we are capable of beating them and any team at home,” he said.

Forest, who are in the promotion hunt, dropped points at the weekend after being held to a 1-1 draw away to lowly Blackpool.

Wells said that he and his Huddersfield team-mates will be wary of today’s opponents, who are fifth and are unbeaten in their past 15 matches in the Championship.

“This is another big game for us,” he said. The goals have dried up for Wells lately, his last arriving in a 2-1 league defeat away at Queens Park Rangers last month.

“It is time to get back on the scoresheet,” Wells said.

Wells showed signs that he is adapting to Huddersfield’s fluent passing game, linking the play and holding the ball up to allow his team-mates to run into space on the few occasions he was in possession.

“It is important to hold the ball up,” Wells said.

“I have always played with someone who has done most of that, but now I have to get that into my game.

“Week in and week out, I have worked on linking up play and getting hold of the ball, which I’m totally capable of.

“I just have to keep working on it, and that’s something that will improve at this level.”

Wells was limited to a half-chance from a tight angle against Wigan and spent most of the time dropping back to help defend as Huddersfield tried to come to terms with the windy conditions. He was substituted on 61 minutes.

“It was really tough to get at them,” Wells said. “Everything was coming back at us, and the chances really didn’t fall for us. But it was more important to get the win, and fortunately we did.”
