Butterfield’s ups and downs

The Royal Gazette / Bermuda Stock Exchange Index rose 1.76 percent last week in a topsy-turvy few days for Butterfield Bank shares.

The bank closed the week five cents, or three percent, higher at $1.70, but not before it had first shot up ten cents to a 52-week high of $1.75 and then retreated five cents. A total of 29,474 Butterfield shares changed hands during the bank’s five-day rollercoaster ride.

The biggest gainer of the week was Devonshire Industries, owner of the Bermuda Paint Co, which rocketed 95 cents, or 31.1 percent, to close on $4, on the trading of 1,000 shares.

Insurer BF&M Ltd was the other stock to advance, gaining six cents, or 0.4 percent, to close on $16.66 as 1,600 shares traded.

Utilities did not fare so well last week, with both Ascendant Group (down two percent) and KeyTech Ltd (down 0.2 percent) losing ground.
