‘A feeling of wilderness’ on Trunk Island

In the middle of the loch-like body of water that is Harrington Sound sits Trunk Island, with its seven acres of wooded paths, stands of centuries-old palmettos, grassy lawns, rocky shorelines and dainty beaches.

There are also two houses, one of which is for sale along with about a third of this island.

It is a rustic cottage in an idyllic location — natural, private, unique.

Trunk Island, so named after its two elephant trunk peninsulas, is the largest island in Harrington Sound, and is described by the spokesman for the owners Duncan Zuill as “a truly beautiful and unspoilt location home to Bermuda longtails and the two houses.”

He said Trunk Island Cottage offers peaceful seclusion and natural beauty — the perfect retreat from the mainland.

“Built for servants in the days when cows were swum out to the island to graze there, it stands about 300 yards away from its neighbour in a central part of its 2.41 acres.”

He described the cottage as a single floor property with a relatively large, south-west facing veranda (eight feet by 20 feet) with a breathtaking view towards Tern Island, Rabbit Island as well as Flatts Inlet beyond. He said the cottage is strongly constructed and weathers well. “There is cooking gas, electricity, a water tank and plenty of opportunity to renovate.

“The master bedroom (ten feet by 13 feet), side bedroom (13 feet by eight feet) and living room (13 feet by 14 feet) are all created by partitions inside a 34 foot by 13 foot interior, and there is an adjoining kitchen (10 feet, six inches by 13 feet, six inches), a bathroom and a back veranda (seven feet by 17 feet).

Trunk Island is only accessible by boat and the property comes with a dock.

Mr Zuill said: “This is a very difficult property to part with, but we are confident the next owners will see its beauty and love it for what it is — a natural paradise. In terms of price, it is very difficult to compare this property to any other real estate.

“This is a very rare opportunity.

“The flat, gentle woodland walk to the secluded beach, the feeling of wilderness from the ancient Bermuda palmettos and the sounds of little waves lapping on the rocks are difficult things to put into words.”

Trunk Island Cottage can be visited by appointment, offers in excess of $2 million considered. Contact Duncan Zuill, 2014.ti@gmail.com for further information.
