Goal-shy Wells targets Barnsley

Wells has not scored since January 18 against QPR

Nahki Wells has targeted Saturday’s derby with Barnsley to end his goal drought.

The Huddersfield Town striker has had a frustrating time lately, failing to find the net in six matches after scoring in each of his first two appearances for the West Yorkshire club in the wake of his January transfer from Bradford City.

Now he is looking to this weekend’s home match with Barnsley to get back to scoring again.

“The manager [Mark Robins] has shown faith in me and it’s up to me to repay him,” Wells told the Huddersfield Examiner yesterday.

Huddersfield suffered a 2-0 home defeat by Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday to remain fourteenth in the Sky Bet Championship, ten points off a play-off spot with 14 games remaining. Wells was substituted in the 71st minute, just before Wednesday made the game safe with their second goal.

“I’m very critical of my recent performances,” Wells said. “I wasn’t good enough on Saturday and I can probably say the same about the last few matches.

“The chances haven’t fallen for me as fluently as I’d like. That’s where as a striker you need to be creative and I don’t think I’ve done that. But I’m not going to let it knock me back. I’m going to keep going and, hopefully, once I’ve got a goal, more will follow.”

Wells netted 15 times for Bradford and was one of the top scorers in League One before his club-record £1.3 million move to Huddersfield.

Playing with a new club in a more competitive division has had it challenges for Wells, who has not scored since January 18 in the 2-1 defeat away to Queens Park Rangers.

“I’ve come from a very different environment and made a big step up,” he said of the move to the Championship. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

“Even though I was fortunate enough to score in my first two games, I always knew things would need to settle down. But it’s not about the team learning to play with me, it’s about me learning to play with them. Hopefully, it’ll come in time.”

The Bermudian added: “We’re still a relatively young team trying to progress at this level. We’re trying to look up the table to finish as close as we can to the play-offs.”

Robins pleaded with supporters to be patient with the team in the wake of last weekend’s result, although he admitted that he had no excuses for a disappointing performance at home that bore no comparison to the victory away to Birmingham City seven days earlier.

“I can totally understand their frustration,” he said. “At the stage we are at, sometimes you have a performance like [against Wednesday].”
