Today, a London-based Bermudian entrepreneur brings her product home.

Miles Market is the first local supermarket to introduce Cuckoo Bircher Muesli products to Bermuda.

Created in London by Anna Mackenzie, Cuckoo is finally making its way to Bermuda’s shores. Ms MacKenzie and her partner Lucy Wright launched the on-the-go breakfast and snack product exclusively at Selfridges in London in December 2013. Distribution has now penetrated the UK foods market throughout England and the brand has received a significant amount of publicity within the food trade market.

The product was inspired by the Swiss recipe for Bircher muesli and the Alpine lifestyle, according to the product website. Produced in Wales, the first shipment of Cuckoo is due to arrive in Bermuda today.

The product will be launched at Miles Market this Saturday with a free food sampling from 11am to 1pm.

According to a press release about the product, the addition of Cuckoo Muesli to shelves at Miles is the company’s first official export.

Co-founder and director of the new company Ms Mackenzie said: “We are delighted to have Miles Market and Bermuda be our first export. We look forward to offering customers a free sampling in the store on Saturday and we encourage everyone to stop by, have a taste and give us your feedback.”

The Bircher muesli pots are being marketed as an ideal option for a fast, simple and nutritious breakfast or snack for the busy lifestyle of today’s consumers.

Flavours include Elderflower and Cranberry, Dark Chocolate and Sour Cherry, Apple and Cinnamon Spice, Apricot and Madagascan Vanilla and Mango and Coconut.

Ms Mackenzie said: “Inspired by my mother’s own recipes, Cuckoo started out in my small kitchen in Notting Hill, London. After several months of very hard work, my business partner and I are finally executing and witnessing the actualisation of our business plan. It is very exciting and rewarding.”

Ms Mackenzie currently manages the business from London where she lives, but she is coming home to be at the Cuckoo food sampling launch at Miles this Saturday. “The export of our product to Bermuda marks a big step for our company in terms of distribution. Bermuda will be our first international test market. If the product is received well and the distribution process goes smoothly, then we will definitely consider other countries for international export.” she said.

“Our product, being fresh, natural and free from preservatives is something we truly believe in, but it does make the business of exporting quite challenging due to its short shelf life. If all goes well with the Bermuda export then we definitely will be exploring further export opportunities even as far as Malta and Hong Kong.”

Patrick James, perishable manager at Miles Market, said: “We are thrilled to add Cuckoo to our list of products, not only because the co-founder of the company is Bermudian, but also because the product fits in perfectly with our offerings. It is fresh, natural, healthy and simple which is exactly what our consumers are looking for today. The flavours are unique and have great texture.”

He felt Cuckoo will be a hit with Miles’ customers.
