Pilgrim impresses in Florida

Tyler Smith in action on the weekend

Alex Pilgrim claimed a credible sixth-place finish at the Clermont Draft Legal Challenge Triathlon in Florida at the weekend.

Competing in the 12-16 age group, Pilgrim finished the 375-metre swim, ten-kilometre bike and 2.5km run in a time of 36 minutes and 58 seconds. Ricardo Reyes, of Florida, headed the 33-strong field in 34:27.

Tyler Smith, 16, was the youngest competitor in the Under-25 Elite Development race and finished an encouraging 35th out of a field of 50 competitors.

Smith finished the 750-metre swim, 20km bike and 5km run in one hour, five minutes, six seconds.

Meanwhile, fellow Bermudians Gary Taylor and Tats Hoshina competed in New Zealand Ironman in Taupo at the weekend.

Hoshina, who raced in the men’s 50-54 age group, finished the 3.9km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run, in a time of 13:39:08. He came 673rd in a field of 1,586.

Taylor, competing in the men’s 55-59 age group, finished 53rd in his age group out of 87 in a time of 14:06:10. The race was won by last year’s runner-up Marco Albert, of Estonia, who finished in 8:17:33.
