An emotional Erica Woods said a fond farewell to the Cam Henderson Centre after making her final home appearance for Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, last night.

But not before helping her team erase a 13-point deficit and go on to beat UTSA Road Runners 81-76 in overtime.

“It was definitely special to win in my last home game,” said Woods, the Marshall captain, who went 0-2 from the floor and grabbed three rebounds. “Every senior wants to play their last game at home and come out on top.

“It was really special and everybody was excited and gave each other hugs in the locker room afterwards. I was just happy that we were all able to come together and come out on top.”

Point guard Norrisha Victrum led Marshall’s scoring with 17 points on 5 for 15 shooting, including three monster buckets from beyond the arc, as the team improved their overall season record to 10-19. Suporia Dickens and Chelsey Romero, both forwards, chipped in with 14 points apiece.

Victrum, who played all but six minutes of the match, also had three steals.

Woods and her team-mates were slow getting out of the blocks and found themselves trailing by 11 points at the half.

“We weren’t playing to the best of our abilities in the first half,” Woods said. “Coach [Matt Daniel] got on us in the locker room at half time and we just came together and bought into the system.”

Marshall finally switched on in the second period, outscoring UTSA 40-29 to force the game into overtime and go onto to claim their ninth home win of the season and give Woods the perfect send off.

“Our energy was ten times as better than it was in the first half,” said Woods.

“I am so just glad we all stuck together whether we went on runs or they went on runs.”

Woods was among three Marshall seniors honoured by the school during a brief ceremony held at mid court prior to the start of the game.

Attending the ceremony was Woods’ parents Eric and Joanne, brother Eron and son Zion.

“It was a special night for me,” added Woods, who was offered a full scholarship to play for Marshall in 2009. “It was also a special win.”

In 2009 Woods represented Great Britain’s Under-20 Women’s Olympic development team at the European Championships held in Macedonia and Greece.
