Head shaves raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the St Baldrick’s Foundation

Saltus students and relatives have raised nearly $200,000 in pledges for the St Baldrick’s Foundation after taking part in head shaving events at the school. A further fund raising head shave event was held at the BAA last night with more pledges being made to assist the cancer charity the St Baldrick’s Foundation.

With more than 80 students and relatives having their hair shaved off on St Baldrick’s Day, Saltus Grammar School has smashed through its original goal of raising $120,000 for the cancer charity.

Last night the total pledged was nearly $200,000. Further funds were being raised at a separate public head shaving event, held at BAA yesterday evening.

For the eighth year Saltus yesterday took part in the annual fundraising event to help the St Baldrick’s Foundation.

Students, former students, relatives and a teacher all went under the shears for the cause.

Several participants also donated their hair to Locks of Love to provide hair pieces for children with long-term medically related hair loss.

Susan Heard, director of partnerships for the St Baldrick’s Foundation, attended the head shaving events, as did Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre representatives and the Deputy Governor Ginny Ferson.

In addition to the head shaving events, over 165 Upper Primary students made a donation to participate in a “Rainbow Loom Lunch” on March 10. Bracelets made at the lunch were sold and funds raised from this together with Upper Primary milk and popcorn. Funds will go the St Baldrick’s Foundation. Upper and Lower Primary students had a Green Grub Day on Friday to raise additional funds, and Secondary students made a donation to view the shaving event in the Haygarth Gymnasium.

Hairdressers involved were Salon Visage, The Cutting Room, Salon 27, Bang Bang Hair, The Hideaway, and TK Hair.
