Two concerts will be just a part of the 24 Bermuda Yoga Festival

Soul Kirtan performer CC White.

Traffic, family squabbles, work — modern life can be stressful. Relax with two kirtan concerts being offered during the Bermuda Yoga Festival next month.

Kirtan is a group gathering where sacred mantras (prayers) are sung together in a call-and-response style.

The music is sung in the Sanskrit language, in a style that makes it accessible for everyone. It is growing in popularity across the world.

Two well known international kirtan artists will be performing in Bermuda, David Newman (Durga Das) and CC White.

Mr Newman has visited Bermuda before. He is a practitioner and educator of Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of love.

He has several music albums out including Lotus Feet: A Kirtan Revolution and Soul Freedom, among others. CC White has been chanting for 15 years and released a popular album in 2011 called This is Soul Kirtan.

“Kirtan feels good. It’s about love. It’s about joy. It’s about peace,” said Ms White.

Both shows will also feature local kirtan groups such as a band for the first night and a local kirtan choir for the second night.

Mr Newman will open the kirtan section of the Bermuda Yoga Festival with a concert on April 4 at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel.

Expect folk-song melodies, light rock and a little bit of country as well as some traditional chanting.

LA Yoga Magazine has referred to Mr Newman as “reminiscent of George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon when they are in soul mode”.

CC White will perform on April 5 at the same venue. CC is known for her rich soulful voice, which naturally lends itself to mantras with the influences of gospel, blues, old school soul, R&B and even a little reggae.

The concerts are part of the Bermuda Yoga Festival on from April 3 to 6.

For both concerts, doors open at 6.30pm. Concert tickets are available at www.ptix.bm, $55 per concert or $95 for both.

Children under 12 are free. Bring a cushion as it is traditional to sit on the floor, although there will be some chairs available.

Yoga festival passes are on sale exclusively at www.ptix.bm available as Kirtan only, One Day Pass, Two Day Pass, “Quick Dip Pass” (taster of three sessions and one kirtan concert), or $499 for the Full Festival Pass.

The event is being sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Authority and with Fairmont Southampton Hotel as primary partner.

Special room rates are available for Festival pass holders.

“We encourage you to come with an open mind, and leave with an open heart,” said organiser Deborah Jackson.
