Mark Robins, the Huddersfield Town manager, has challenged Nahki Wells to embark on a scoring streak after ending his nine-game goal drought.

Wells, a club-record signing from Bradford City in the January transfer window, scored in Huddersfield’s 4-2 home defeat by Blackburn Rovers in the Sky Bet Championship last weekend. It was his third goal for the club.

Robins, a former Manchester United and Norwich City striker, hopes that Wells’s confidence will be brimming after rediscovering his scoring touch.

“He is getting to grips with things, and I’ve been really pleased with his recent performances,” Robins told The Huddersfield Daily Examiner.

“It’s not all about scoring goals, and Nahki has been doing a lot of good work for the team.

“But he’s a striker at the end of the day and I was delighted he scored against Blackburn. You could sense some tension was released when the ball hit the back of the net.”

Wells’s strike against Blackburn was his first since scoring in a 2-1 defeat by Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on January 18.

The former Dandy Town man had gone 15 hours without scoring and his relief was palpable.

“It was a massive relief to hit the back of the net,” Wells told The Royal Gazette this week. “Any striker that goes this long without a goal feels the pressure building on their shoulders, but I knew it would come.”

Huddersfield, who are 12 points above the relegation zone, play Blackpool at Bloomfield Road tomorrow.

Freddy Hall, Wells’s Bermuda team-mate, has been assured that he will be given a chance to prove he is worth a longer contract by Gary Rowett, the Burton Albion manager.

The Royal Gazette revealed this week that the 29-year-old goalkeeper had joined the League Two club until the end of the season.

“Freddy has been training with us and he has a good pedigree,” Rowett said. “It will give us a chance to look at him more long-term. He has played at a good level with Toronto FC and this is a chance for him to make a career in England.

“Rather than him stay with us until the end of the season and keep looking at him, we’ve made the decision to offer him a short-term contract.

“If injury and form prevail, he could sit on the bench. We’re delighted to have him on board.”

Rob Lainton is Burton’s first- choice goalkeeper, but his loan deal from Bury extends only to include the play-off semi-finals in early May.

Hall and the club’s other goalkeeper, Dean Lyness, would both be available should Burton, who are fifth in League Two, reach the final at Wembley Stadium.
