The decision by league leaders Dandy Town to surrender home field advantage for Sunday’s potential Premier Division title decider against dethroned champions Devonshire Cougars at St John’s Field has been strongly rejected by former club president and founding member, Cecil Lewis.

The Bermuda Football Association announced earlier this week that Western Stars Sports Club, under whose auspices Dandy Town fall, have closed their field to begin preparing for the upcoming cricket season.

Rather than having the luxury of attempting to clinch the title in their own back yard, Town will face Cougars in their league finale at Goose Gosling Field instead, which does not sit well with Lewis whose son Jomar is Town’s coach.

Lewis believes the decision to forfeit home field advantage for a match with so much at stake is a “slap in the face” to those who worked hard to provide the Pembroke club with a playing field.

“As a founding member it is an insult to us because we have worked hard to provide a home field and to just give away a home game is something I cannot accept,” Lewis said.

“The founding members trucked wheelbarrows of soil so we can have a home field, and now they are giving the advantage away.”

Town, the league leaders, hold a two-point advantage over second place North Village heading into the final round of the season.

“It is just really upsetting to get down to the crunch two points ahead and you are switching the field, why?” Lewis added. “To take it away just doesn’t make any sense logically and financially.”

There are ongoing claims suggesting that Town’s decision to have the match switched stemmed from the team’s poor home record. The Dudley Eve Trophy holders have only won on three occasions at St John’s Field this term.

Wayne Campbell, the club president, has dismissed claims that Town requested to have the match switched because of Town’s disappointing home record.
