Listen more carefully to the people

While there maybe no reasons to push panic buttons at the moment, the mere mention of a possible third political party for Bermuda, could be seen as a warning light that rumblings over whether we are moving in the right direction, has hit a nerve with sections of the electorate, providing room for such an endeavour, even if for the purpose of exposing dissatisfaction over the performance of our current legislators.

Bermuda has travelled the road of third party initiatives before, with no legacy that the move would hold the key to unsolved problems and break new ground in gaining sufficient support to take control of Government.

Without the demise of the former United Bermuda Party, which lost favour with the public, after a lengthy spell at the helm, and the significant disappointment over the performance of the Progressive Labour Party Government after a 14 year run, the One Bermuda Alliance would have had an almost impossible task in trying to penetrate what appeared to be a rock solid system of Governing Bermuda.

Democracy in its truest form, allows for a third, fourth or fifth political group to form if it is possible to garnish enough support to become effective as a political force for change.

However in our small jurisdiction even the two party system can set off a feeding frenzy in trying to capture enough voter support required to govern.

Unless we are going to have candidates from another planet, with no questionable leanings for this or that group, there could be even more political confusion over what is best for Bermuda.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any effort to ignite a third political entity when political conflict reaches a scale where politicians seem more at war with each other, than over the issues that effect the daily lives of all Bermudians.

Most people are disgusted with confrontations that have little to do with key issues of the day.

There are so many concerns that need cooperation at a level never seen before, if Bermuda is to move out of this gravely serious economic state that continues to create stress for many in keeping food on the table and a roof overhead.

Our political leaders need to listen more carefully to the people, and remember what is expected at a time when the island faces many challenges.

Bermuda can ill afford to have two worlds, when it comes to basic standards for good healthy living for every citizen.

The Government has a formidable task to steer our Island ship into calmer waters, but at no time must they appear to be operating without keeping the passengers fully informed on any course changes.

Fully informed means just that. Too often with most governments, crucial information is held back at times for various political reasons, creating scepticism about transparency which in turn leads to doubt.

The last thing any Government needs are voters feeling doubt about open honest information in affairs of the land.

The voters do not need to be in possession of doctorates on politics, to make judgments on how well our politicians are performing.

Being a member of Parliament is an honour, and should never be used for anything other than to serve the people of this Island with truthfulness and dignity.

The people are not in the mood for new political battles which will only delay the co-operative spirit so desperately needed in order to move forward.

Unlike politicians, the voters usually have their say at polling stations rather than news microphones.

While mention of a third political party maybe good news for some, it should also be a red alert that both the governing OBA, and the Opposition PLP need to clean up their act, in serving the people with transparency, accountability and respectability.

If political status is placed above those qualities, we all are in for a very rough ride.
