Furtado claims Golden Boot

Jessica Furtado, the Futsal golden boot winner, in action for the Cyrille Regis Team against the Clyde Best Team at Somerset Cricket Club at the weekend

Jessica Furtado, the PHC Zebras striker, played down her ten-goal performance that won her the Bermuda Futsal Federation “Golden Boot”.

Furtado needed to overcome a four-goal deficit to overtake Shuntae Todd, the Somerset Hurricanes striker, in the final round of the season.

She did much more than that, bagging ten goals in her side’s 14-2 thrashing of Hamilton Parish. The victory capped an unbeaten season for the champions.

“I’m very pleased with winning the Golden Boot because I wasn’t expecting to win it,” Furtado said. “My team-mates played a big role also.

“I didn’t expect to score ten goals. I was aiming for eight because I felt if I could get to eight, then I would be safe.”

Aaliyah Nolan helped Furtado in the scoring department, grabbing a hat-trick, while Leanne Yates also scored.

Asrael Basden and Jayda Hill-Steede scored for Parish.

Furtado is a leading contender for the MVP trophy, along with Todd and Cheyra Bell, of Footy Force Stars.

“My main focus was to lead my team to an undefeated season again and play as a leader on the court, being an older player on the team,” Furtado said.

“It definitely feels good coming out on top with an undefeated season and Golden Boot award, but I couldn’t do it without my team.

“The title means more than the goals because, like I said, I wasn’t expecting to win it.”

Cleshaunay Darrell-Virgil, the Dandy Stars striker, helped herself to 11 goals and second place in the scoring charts as her side beat Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds 13-3.

Kashintae Fox and Kyla Ramatar also scored for Stars, while Kyanne Scott-Fishenden, Zekiah Lewis and Satyrah Robinson were on target for the Bluebirds.

Hurricanes and Footy Force drew 5-5. Bell and Zahra Gibbons both had two goals apiece, while K’Shaela Burch-Waldron added the other.

Sierra Fisher and Dazhja Greaves scored two goals each for Hurricanes, with Todd also getting her name on the scoresheet.
