Nolan on cloud nine as PHC complete double

PHC Lady Zebras completed a league and cup double on Saturday when they won the inaugural Women’s Futsal Cup at the Bermuda College gymnasium.

Having to play three games to hoist the trophy, the Warwick-based club swept aside all before them en route to the title.

They beat Dandy Town Gold 7-2 in the final after the eventual runners-up had to come out of the losers’ bracket.

In the first round of matches, Zebras beat Somerset Hurricanes 5-3, the closest any side would come to beating them, while Hamilton Parish edged Young Men’s Social Club Bluebirds 3-2 and Dandy Town Brown got past Dandy Town Gold 4-3.

Dandy Town Gold beat Parish in the first semi-final on penalties after the teams were deadlocked at 5-5 in regulation. Zebras made light work of Dandy Town Brown, brushing them aside 7-1 in their semi-final match.

Aliyah Nolan, the Lady Zebras striker, won the Most Valuable Player Award and was the leading goalscorer, hitting the back of the net nine times.

Action returns to Bermuda College this week when Footy Force Stars host the first Footy Force Under-13 Futsal Invitational.

Sponsored by Footy Promotions, the tournament will include Bermuda’s Brazilian Football School, North Village and Sidekick Soccer Academy from Boston, Massachusetts.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Warwick Academy gymnasium on Thursday starting at 5.30pm, and competition runs from Friday to Sunday at the College.

“We are thrilled to host this futsal event,” Vinzie Zuill, the president of Footy Force Futsal Academy, said.

“Youth players have been increasingly playing futsal and it is great that Sidekick Soccer Academy is travelling to Bermuda to play tournament matches with the participating local teams.”
