Delay has not affected Town, says Wilkinson

Confident: Town coach Wilkinson

Dandy Town Hornets and North Village Rams returned to training this week to continue their preparations for the rescheduled FA Cup Final on Sunday, but Jomar Wilkinson, the Town coach, does not believe the delay is a setback for his side.

“I was kind of disappointed to have the game postponed because my players were really up for it,” said Wilkinson, whose side are aiming to finish the season with a third trophy, having already won the Dudley Eve and Premier Division title.

“Given the circumstances it’s always good to have additional time to prepare so we’ll use that extra time and hopefully we can get everything right.

“My players do have a lot of minutes in their legs this season and we’ll use the time to recuperate and give some players a rest in preparation for the final.

“All my players are back off suspension and injury and it’s very competitive in training right now. Everybody is competing for a spot and looking forward to Sunday.”

Wilkinson agrees with the praises heaped on Damon Ming, the experienced Town winger, by Dennis Brown, the Devonshire Cougars coach, who tipped him to win this season’s MVP award.

“Damon has been the ultimate professional this season, from day one he has been giving me 100 percent and is irreplaceable and a good example for our youth coming through,” Wilkinson said.

“He’s been the ideal coach’s player and Dennis has hit the nail on the head.

“He’s definitely been one of our outstanding players this season and I do tip him for the MVP award.”

Wilkinson also singled out two of his young players for their contribution to the team, full back Terrence Webb and striker Zaire Burchall, both former members of the Bermuda Under-17 team, which played in World Cup qualifying matches in 2012.

“Terrence is in his first season in the Premier Division and has been more of a regular than Zaire and I tip him for the Young Player of the Year award,” Wilkinson added.

It has been a gruelling season for the Hornets, who picked up their first trophy of the campaign in November when they beat Devonshire Cougars in the Dudley Eve Final.

They thrashed Cougars 7-2 in their final league match to clinch the league title and now are aiming for the FA Cup, though, unlike Cougars last season, it will not count as the triple crown as Somerset Trojans lifted the Friendship Trophy.

“We set some goals at the beginning of the season and one of those goals was to win the FA Cup, so my players are eager to get this game over with and ready to go out there and represent Dandy Town to the best of their ability,” Wilkinson said.

“Our main objective was to earn some respect for Dandy Town and to be in the big conversation which is by winning the triple crown.

“We are unfortunate not to be in contention for the triple crown but we are very pleased to be champions of the league, the Dudley Eve and, hopefully, champions of the FA Cup.”

Taking on Village in an FA Cup Final between the first and second-place teams in the league, is a fitting way to end the season, Wilkinson believes.

He has utmost respect for Village and will not be taking them lightly, considering their FA Cup record of nine victories, one less than PHC Zebras.

“We have a lot of respect for Village, they are one of the elite teams in Bermuda and we expect a difficult game,” Wilkinson added.

“We expected North Village to be in and around [the top] at the end of the league race because they have the know-how to win trophies from past experiences.

“Obviously going into the final they are going to be disappointed not to win the league so they will come with all guns firing to try to win the FA Cup.”

Added Wilkinson: “To have to play the defending champions [Cougars] in the last game to win the league, it was a remarkable achievement by my team, and now having to go up against the second-place team to win the FA will really be icing on the cake.”

Town’s Player Development League team will take on BAA Wanderers in the PDL final at noon, followed by the Masters Final between Young Men’s Social Club and St George’s Stallions at 2pm.

The FA Cup Final is scheduled to start at 4pm.
