About 100 youngsters have been sharpening their football skills at this week’s inaugural Glasgow Rangers Schools Camp.

The clinic, hosted by North Village, is for boys and girls from clubs across the Island and is being held at Bernard Park and the Whitney Institute. Allan Young, the North Village Community Club vice-president, said he was thrilled to welcome the Rangers coaches to Island.

“The calibre of coaching that has been demonstrated is unparalleled and we couldn’t be happier with how things are progressing,” Young said.

“The tone that has been set is one of conducting the lifestyle of an elite athlete. Diet, nutrition, hydration, rest, recovery and injury prevention are all key elements.

“We ask that, at all times, the children demonstrate a good attitude, be respectful, play, train and learn with effort and enthusiasm.”

Four coaches from the Scottish League One side are being assisted by local coaches Jeremy Salaam, Matteo Turner, Wayne Smith, Azende Furbert, Judah Chapman and Jermaine Smith.

John Joyce, one of the Rangers coaches, has had a favourable first impression of the youngsters who he said had responded well to the coaching.

“We aim to develop professional youth players and we have been impressed by some of the talent that we have seen in these first couple of days,” Joyce said.

“We expect that the Rangers/North Village partnership will be a very fruitful one over the coming years. We would also like to offer our best wishes to all Bermuda athletes who will be taking part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. We look forward to welcoming them and offering the same hospitality that Bermuda has graciously shown us.”

Village will be making their second trip to Scotland this summer where the players will train, compete and be evaluated by professional coaches.

“We are committed to providing opportunities for our youth players who wish to be on a path of professional development,” Young said.
