Dage Minors took third place in the 1500 metres with a sprint at the finish line on Saturday.

Sakari Famous, Kyrah Scraders and Dage Minors all won medals for Bermuda on the opening day of the 43rd Carifta Games in Martinique on Saturday.

Famous, 14, won a silver medal to go with the silver she won in Bahamas last year when she tied for second place in the girls’ under-18 high jump.

Famous had a best leap of 1.60 metres to tie for second with Martinique’s Jeanine Allard-St-Albin and Ashlee Edward, of St Lucia, while Lamara Destin, of Jamaica, took the gold with her winning leap of 1.68 metres.

Famous’s silver medal leap in 2013 was 1.65 metres.

Scraders is on course for medals in both the 800 and 1,500 metres again after she picked up a silver in the 1,500 metres on Saturday. Cassey George, of Guyana, again stood between Scraders and a gold medal when she led home the ten finishers in 4min 40.40sec while Scraders was almost three seconds behind in 4:43.30 and Britnie Dixon third in 4:53.84.

It was the fourth straight year that Scraders has won a medal in the under-18 1,500 metres, having won a bronze as a 13-year-old in Jamaica in 2011 before winning the silver on home soil in 2012.

Last year, Scraders won the silver medal again, running a national youth record time of 4:39.43 in Bahamas to finish behind George’s time of 4:36.67, though the windy conditions made for slower times this time as both were well off last year’s times.

Scraders is on course to defend her 800 metres gold from last year after qualifying for today’s final. Scraders, who recorded a personal best time of 2:11.62 to win the gold last year, clocked a time of 2:14.15 yesterday to finish second in her heat which was won by Dixon in a time of 2:13.72.

Scraders qualified for the final by virtue of her placing along with Junelle Bromfield, of Jamaica, and Shaquania Dorsett, of Bahamas, while four others advanced on the next fastest times.

Dage Minors was the third Bermuda athlete on the podium on Saturday, finishing third in the under-20 1,500 metres with a time of 3:58.39 in a tight finish for the first four finishers. The race was won by Chadoye Dawson, of Jamaica, in 3:56.93, while Nicholas Landeau, of Trinidad and Tobago, in 3:58.27, edged out Minors for the silver medal.

Marbeq Edgar, of St Lucia, just missed out on a medal after finishing fourth behind Minors in 3:58.72.

Competing in the 800 metres was David Darrell who marked his first Carifta appearance yesterday with a fourth-place finish in his heat with a time of 2:04.29 which failed to qualify him for the finals.

Machaiah Robinson, of Bermuda, competed in heat two and finish sixth in 2:06.76. The fastest time posted in the heats was the 1:57.78 which enabled Jamaica’s Ryan Bulter to win heat four.

Tiara DeRosa finished sixth in the under-18 girls’ discus event with a throw of 35.28 metres, well off the winning throw of 46.47 metres by Jamaica’s Janel Fullerton.

DeRosa also competed in the shot on Saturday, finishing 13th with a best effort of 11.84 metres. The winning mark was 16.12 by Chelsea James, of Trinidad and Tobago.

Taariah Butterfield qualified for the final of the girls under-20 100 metres where she finished eighth in 11.74 seconds. The final was won by Jamaica’s Jonielle Smith in 11.17 seconds.

Butterfield reached the final after placing fifth in the second of two qualifying heats with a time of 11.84 seconds. Jamaicans Kedisha Dallas and Smith won the respective heats in 11.62 and 11.39 seconds.

Kyrah Scraders: Won a silver medal in the 1500 metres on Saturday, her fourth consecutive medal in the 1500 metres at the Carifta Games.
