Elsbeth Gibson’s son dies in the US

The son of a well-known Bermuda arts figure has died in the US.

Neil Gibson, son of actress, producer and director Elsbeth Gibson, died in February.

Mr Gibson, who lived in Bermuda as a child and attended the Whitney Institute, was a regular visitor to Bermuda.

Friend Blake West, who runs a fishing charter business and went to school with him, said: “He used to come down every two years or so, hang out, check his mates and go fishing.”

Bermuda entertainment legend Gene Steede, who credited Ms Gibson with helping to jump start his career aged just 17, said: “He was a wonderful guy and so well-mannered.

“He had a brilliant mind — he was just a nice person to know.”

American-born Ms Gibson, who died in 2005, was a leading light in Bermuda dramatics and the arts world.

Mr Gibson, whose obituary notice appeared in The Royal Gazette last week, was described as “the adopted son of our Island nation and the proud state of Georgia”.

It added: “He leaves behind archival masterpieces of photographs, poems and artworks. It is hoped that generations of world citizenry will get the chance to appreciate his creative genius.”

Mr Gibson is survived by wife Kelly, son Jakub and daughter Luna and stepson Joseph, as well as by two grandchildren, Sean and Blake.

The obituary notice added that Mr Gibson’s ashes would be returned to Bermuda.
