The mighty yellow ducks are back again: Friends of Hospice, in tandem with Belco, have announced the 18th Annual Rubber Duck Derby in support of Agape House and hospice care.

The Duck Derby Race will take to the waters at 2pm on June 1 from Ordnance Island, St George’s — with the aim of raising $150,000 for the Island’s only inpatient hospice facility.

Along with water races, the popular family event brings food stalls, children’s games, face painting and live entertainment onshore.

Belco’s Linda Smith reported that the Derby has funded a full time chef and full time counsellor for Agape House, along with a volunteer companion programme, education for staff and building improvements.

Cancer diagnosis is the mainstay of admissions to Agape House, according to director Cathy Belvedere, but the facility cares for “a diverse mix of non cancer terminally sick patients”.

Tickets go on sale starting April 30, at Agape House, Belco, Party Plus, Salon Visage, or by calling Friends of Hospice at 232-0859. They are also available at grocery stores and other outlets island wide.
