Women in Sports 5K set for Sunday

The Women in Sports 5K run/walk and Girls Rock 1 Mile Run will be held this weekend with both races having a mother and daughter theme.

The Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA), in conjunction with Argus, will present the second annual event, which was launched last year as part of the Women in Sports Expo.

The Expo is scheduled to be held every two years to encourage girls and women to take part in sport.

The one-mile race will start at 3pm and a 5K run/walk at 3.15pm. Both routes will begin and end at the Argus Group on Wesley Street.

Children under 18 can participate in the Girls Rock, while only girls over 13 may take part in the 5K walk or run. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in the 1 mile run and the 5K run. A prize will also be awarded to the company with the most participants, with school with the most participants and the National Sports Governing Body team with the most participants.

Funds raised will enable the BNAA to send teams to international competitions.

Donna Watson, the Bermuda National Athletics Association, president said: “We are pleased to be organising this run/walk for the second year.

“Last year’s inaugural event was a great success in bringing women together to not only participate, but also to learn from each other.

“As women, it is important to encourage each other and to have fun staying active and fit, and this event is designed to do just that.”

Katura Perinchief, chairman of Women in Sports, said: “Bermuda Women in Sports Committee is dedicated to having a positive influence on access for women to an enriching sport experience.”
