‘Upsets on the cards’

Defending champion: Foster

More than 75 players will compete in the World Distributors Charity Tournament at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association courts in Devonshire.

Patrick Foster, the defending champion and BSRA director, is the No 1 seed in the men’s A division, while Susie Lacey is the top seed in the women’s A category.

Runa Reta, the BSRA assistant director, has predicted a few upsets in the competition, which starts tonight and runs until Saturday.

“Jason Shrubb has been away in the United States studying, and is seeded third in this men’s event,” Reta said.

“He is surely going to be in top shape after completing the US college season, so he is one who could cause an upset.

“He is scheduled to meet Nick Kyme in the semi-final. Alex Furtado is a former junior who has returned to the Island and will be looking to cause an upset in the Women’s A division.”

Reta believes that the club’s players will be inspired by this month’s Randall & Quilter Legends of Squash tournament, which was also held at the Devonshire courts.

“The Legends event was incredibly inspiring for our members to watch world-class squash, and I know that they have been itching to get back into competition themselves,” Reta said.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Bermuda Diabetes Association.
