Yard fire may have caused $80,000 damage

An explosion and the fire that followed at a Quarry Hill Road construction yard in Warwick on Tuesday could have caused $80,000 in damages, according to worker Francisco DeCosta.

The replacement of tools could cost $60,000 alone.

Landlord Eddie Roque will assess the damage when he returns to the Island before the weekend.

Mr DeCosta said the initial explosion was caused from the overheating of one of the yard’s air tanks creating a fire which destroyed the yard’s garage.

Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to a nearby house.

“We left the yard for 15 minutes and when we returned there was a fire,” said Mr DeCosta.

“We tried to save the house but there was no point in trying to save the yard, it was already gone.

“Currently we’re just cleaning up and trying to replace stuff.

“We need to clean the house because there’s a lot of ash and debris around.”

Mr DeCosta said it was unclear when the construction yard would be ready to reopen.
