Showing a flare for enterprise

Lemonade stand: Addy Clements, Isabella Boonstra, Sydney Bodenstab and Charis Todd at their small business stall

The Bermuda High School has held its first Small Business Day.

Year 9 students had to divide into groups and select the merchandise they wanted to sell.

Groups sold a wide variety of things like candy, tie-dyed and beaded T-shirts, ice-cream, lemonade, baked goods, bracelets and meals to our student body and staff members.

A lot of work was put into every stall. Each group was tasked with designing a logo, creating advertisements, organising finances and, most importantly, buying or making products.

We started months in advance and were given a $50 loan so we could buy the goods necessary to make everything perfect.

Isabella Moresceau said: “Jessie Powell, my partner and I worked very well together. We are great friends so, our team work was strong.”

On the day we used our first period class to set up our stalls. Then we began selling our goods to fellow students as well as the teachers. When recess was over we checked over our inventory and made sure we were ready for the next selling period during lunch.

Throughout the day we discussed which businesses were more successful and why, as well as what we would need to do to improve our sales later.

At the end of the day we counted our money and recorded how much we made so we could donate it to the charity of our choice.

Overall it was a great day, and it is safe to say that everyone learned a lot about what is required to run a prosperous business.

“It was a great experience. It really showed us how hard it is to own a business,” said Samai Seon, whose group sold tie-dyed and beaded T-shirts.

Our Business Studies teacher, Mr Martin, said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was very competitive and some of the products that the students produced showed excellent added value.

“There will be a number of prizes awarded, including best TV advert, best overall promotional strategy, best stall, best overall business and a winner for the business that made the most profit on the day. We are looking forward to expanding this further next year.”
