Top females expected to race

Some of the top sprint distance female triathletes could be in Bermuda in November to compete in the Queen of Bermuda Tri.

The event is being added to the Queen Triathlon Series, the all-women’s sprint distance triathlon series, which takes place on the grounds of the Fairmont Southampton on November 9.

Promoting it as “one of the most beautiful race courses in all of triathlon”, the Queen of Bermuda Tri offers a picturesque backdrop for a sprint distance triathlon with a half mile swim, 12.4 mile bike and 3.1 mile run.

A sprint duathlon of a one mile run and 12.4 mile bike and 3.1 mile run is also planned.

“Just a two hour flight from most East Coast cities, there is no better way to conclude your race season this fall than on the beautiful island of Bermuda,” said Barb McKeever, the series director.

“The Queen Triathlon Series focuses on providing women with the proper tools to successfully complete a sprint distance triathlon. Post-race royal treatments offer women who race with us a special moment to celebrate their accomplishment in a fun setting with fellow triathletes.”

The Bermuda Tourism Authority will use the event to promote the Island as a weekend destination during the off-season.

“The Bermuda Tourism Authority is proud to be a partner in the inaugural Queen of Bermuda Triathlon,” said Pat Phillip Fairn, the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s chief product and experience officer.

“The women who will undertake this challenge will get to swim our beautiful crystal clear waters and cycle and run on our scenic roads, taking in some of the most breathtaking views in the world.”

The Queen of Bermuda Tri festivities begin on Friday, November 7 when presenting sponsor Bacardi Limited host a cocktail reception for participants at its headquarters in Hamilton.

Saturday’s activities begin with yoga on Sands Beach, a group ride to preview the course, an afternoon pre-race swim followed by a talk with one of the world’s top professional triathletes.

The race begins on the Sunday morning with a swim in the waters of the protected cove of East Whale Bay at Fairmont Southampton. The bike and run courses along South Road provide one of the most scenic sprint tri courses in the sport with panoramic views of ocean. A Sunday evening awards party caps off the Queen of Bermuda experience.

The Queen Triathlon Series features three race weekends including the Queen of the Hill Tri (Mulica Hill, New Jersey) on June 28, Queen of the Crest Tri (Wildwood Crest, New Jersey) on August 3, and the new Queen of Bermuda Tri.
