Dwelling is well worth a visit

Visitor attraction: Larry Mills and David Stoneham trim the newly thatched roof of the Settler’s Dwelling during its construction phase in 2012

June 22, 2014

Dear sir,

Without any doubt the Settler’s Dwelling at the Carter House Museum in St David’s should be given immediate status as a highlighted attraction not only for visitors’ enjoyment but for Bermudians as well.

Me and my husband (Americans, but part timers in Bermuda) were charmed with the Carter House, so earnestly and rightfully promoted by Rick Spurling of St David’s Historical Society.

The article recently in the Gazette about the ‘Dwelling’ on the same property was informative and well done, but unfortunately missed a very important part of the story. What was ignored was the required mention of Larry Mills, a well-known Bermudian, whose expertise in many areas is preeminent.

For instance, he was celebrated by diverse and multiple visitors for weeks coming to Masterwork Museum for the showing on the main floor of the intricate and precise method of the correct, old time construction of a true, Bermuda stone roof.

By having a prodigious knowledge of Bermuda’s history and ‘know how’ in a number of other areas as, Larry Mills does, he and fellow workers constructed the historical Settler’s Dwelling which everyone should visit. It is a remarkable construction. Without fail, also inspect the beautiful, old Carter House while there.

Reading about Bermuda’s history is exciting, but seeing is so much more rewarding and the very best.

PS Bermudians or Island visitors should not miss a long visit to the National Museum as well.

It stands at the very west end of Bermuda. It is a fascinating, historical place that has so much of interest to see that a few hours could and should be spent there, easily and happily.
