Minister of Community, Culture and Sports Wayne Scott last night extended his condolences to the family of late Bermudian singer, conductor and educator Gary Burgess.

In his tribute to Dr Burgess, who died at the age of 76, Mr Scott praised his talent and his efforts to enhance the Island’s artistic offerings.

“Bermuda has lost one of our preeminent Bermudian artists,” he said. “He was truly a son of the soil and placed Bermuda on the international artist stage.

“His legacy and work will inspire the next generation of Bermudian artists to excel both here and abroad. We are most proud of his accomplishments and more importantly his commitment to improving the arts in Bermuda.”

Dr Burgess enjoyed a respected career as a soloist, director and conductor, working with opera companies throughout North America and Europe and performing with stars such as Luciano Pavarotti.

He left the Island at 16 after studying at the Berkeley Institute and spent most of his life abroad.

But he returned in 1998 and among his many achievements and roles he served as musical director for the Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra from 1999 until 2006. During this time he composed The Bermuda Symphony, inspired by the discovery of the Island.

Heather Whalen, director of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, described Dr Burgess as “a very humble and unassuming man who believed in giving back to his community”.

“Dr Gary Burgess started the artist-in-residence programme,” she said. “Through this initiative, he introduced many talented musicians and vocalists to the Island.”
