Smith offers helping hand in California

Experiend head: Smith will act as the Under-23 assistant coach

Khano Smith, the former New England Revolution winger, will serve as Don Vickers’s assistant coach when the Bermuda Under-20 team compete in the National Training Centre Invitational in Carson, California next week.

Smith, 32, who also played in the Major League Soccer for the New York Red Bulls and with Lincoln City in England, is presently working as a Revolution Academy coach.

The former Bermuda captain, who is based in Boston, made himself available for the mouth-watering trip, with the Bermuda Football Association recognising it as an excellent opportunity for Smith to begin his coaching involvement with the national programme.

Dennis Brown, who coached the under-20 side at their recent World Cup qualifiers in the Dominican Republic, has been replaced as head coach by Vickers because of work commitments.

The nucleus of the 20-man squad will consist of players who competed at those qualifiers, which Bermuda failed to advance from, while several over-age players including Tre Ming, Zeiko Lewis, Jair Minors, Jalen Harvey and Willie Clemons have bolstered the travelling party.

Bermuda, who received an invitation to the tournament in late June, will depart tomorrow and will play matches against Chile, Australia and the United States, with their first match next Monday against Australia being shown live on www.ussoccer.com

n The BFA confirmed yesterday that Somerset Trojans, not North Village, will be Dandy Town’s opponents in the Charity Cup on August 31 at Goose Gosling Field. As a result, there is also a change to the Dudley Eve fixtures the next day on September 1 with a double-header at Bernard Park, with Hamilton Parish playing North Village instead of Somerset in their group B match.
