Bermuda undone by group winners

Danger men: Douglas Bell moves in to score one of his four goals against Uganda on Saturday (Photo by Elaine Nord)

Bermuda’s two-match winning streak to open the World Championships in Denver, Colorado, was brought to a screeching halt last night when they were beaten 14-5 by group winners Ireland.

The result meant that Bermuda, as runners-up in the Yellow Division, face Sweden, their Orange Division counterparts, for the right to move on in the 38-nation competition.

On Saturday, Bermuda impressed in a 14-5 thumping of Uganda at the Commerce City field on Saturday.

Midfielder Douglas Bell turned in a fine all-rounder performance for Bermuda, with four goals and three assists. Also on target were Drew Jenkins, who backed up his hat-trick in the 9-7 win over France on Friday with another treble, Stephen Michel with three and individual strikes from Andrew Soucie, Quinn McKeown, Kyle Tucker and James Chiappa.

Bermuda began in sprightly fashion, with Jenkins, Tucker and Bell opening an early 3-0 lead. The East Africans fought back to 3-2 before four successive goals provided the cushion of a 7-2 half-time lead, Bell completing a first-half hat-trick with the fifth and sixth.

The second half began with Uganda striking back quickly before the best defensive period of the match, as the attackers were blunted for a little more than ten minutes until Brian Tukire brought the Ugandans within three.

Having not scored for almost 20 minutes, Bermuda might have expected to retreat into their shell, but the response was quick and effective. Jenkins, with two, and Michel were responsible for three goals in less than 2½ minutes to make it 10-4 and knock the competitive stuffing out of Uganda.

Bermuda scored the next four goals, restricting the opposition to only a late consolation with only seconds remaining.

Chances of progressing as winners of the Yellow Division hinge on the outcome against Ireland, who after 17-1 and 22-5 romps over Uganda and France respectively, appear the class of the division. Israel or Sweden, the winners and runners-up respectively, of the Orange Division, await in the next round.
