Appalled by abuse of votes

July 15, 2014

Dear Editor,

Generally, I prefer not to spend too much time on politics as dwelling on most things political has a tendency to make me angry. This latest stunt however really takes the cake. It seems to me that the way democracy is supposed to work is that people vote MPs into parliament to stand for their views and support their interests.

That means that if you stand for election in a constituency and you win that election then you have an obligation to the people of your constituency to sit in parliament and fight for their interests. How on earth can a member of parliament take the view ‘I strongly disagree with this situation, so I’m going to actively do nothing’ (and still get paid for it)? On what planet does that make sense? How can you possibly justify to the people that put their faith in you to represent them walking out of parliament and refusing to sit?! These people should be absolutely disgusted with themselves. They have completely abused the votes that gave them their seats in the first place and I for one am appalled. Do your job; it’s an important one!
