The Opposition Progressive Labour Party remained absent from the House of Assembly today, continuing the boycott of Parliament vowed by party leader Marc Bean.

Mr Bean last week denounced Parliament as “a sham and a farce” after Governor George Fergusson didn’t endorse a Commission of Inquiry into Bermuda’s alleged history of land thefts.

The Commission narrowly won a tightly-contested partisan vote in the House on July 4, but Mr Fergusson subsequently declared that he would need more details before approving it.

Mr Bean responded last Friday with a declaration outside Sessions House that the PLP would not be attending Parliament as a result — although no specific timeline was given.

Party sources had suggested the Opposition might attend today’s sitting of Parliament, but the PLP benches remained empty as of 11.40am.
