Scott attends Commonwealth sports meeting

Sports Minister Wayne Scott

Sports Minister Wayne Scott will be attending the seventh Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ meeting in Glasgow, Scotland tomorrow prior to the start of the Commonmwealth Games this week.

The meeting, which is held every two years, will focus on issues affecting “the integrity of sport, as well as the important contributions of sport and physical activity to development and peace-building efforts — a field known as Sport for Development and Peace (SDP),” according to a Government statement.

“The meeting provides a valuable opportunity to consider the collective progress of Commonwealth member countries in these areas. Ministers and delegates discuss work carried out in the preceding two years and agree action for the next two years.”

Mr Scott said: “I look forward to the opportunity to meet with colleagues to discuss the way sport is used to promote both social and economic development and to share our challenges and successes.”

The Commonwealth Secretariat has organised a full agenda that includes a briefing on progress on Commonwealth Guide to Advancing Development through Sport, Commonwealth Games; Partnership with UNICEF; Governance and Transparency; Safeguarding of Participants and Illegal Betting and Match-Fixing.

Mr Scott, along with his Commonwealth colleagues, will also meet members of the Scottish Government at a welcome reception at the historic Stirling Castle.
