Thief given two years probation

A man has been given two years probation for stealing nearly $5,000 worth of goods.

Earlier this year, Andrew Arorash, 44, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to stealing $4,827 worth of tools and electronics from a garage in Pembroke.

Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney said Arorash stole a television, speaker box and toolbox between May 7 and 8.

He sold the toolbox and threw away the television but the speaker box remains missing.

The court heard that social inquiry, drug assessment and psychiatric reports were ordered which revealed that Arorash’s mental state was tied to drug abuse and that mental health treatment would be best for him.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told Arorash: “What’s clear is that you have mental health problems and that these problems are treatable in a structured environment.”

Arorash was given two years probation during which time he will be transferred to mental health treatment court. He will be provided mental health rehabilitation including placement at Harbour Light treatment facility.

• Also in Magistrates’ Court this morning, 60-year-old Mansfield Armstrong of St George’s pleaded not guilty to possessing two cannabis plants.

Magistrate Warner released Mr Armstrong on $2,000 bail and a trial date was set for October 24.
