Three teenagers who represented Bermuda at a global debate competition in Europe have returned to the Island celebrating after reaching the quarter finals.

Megan Sutcliffe, 14, a pupil at Bermuda High School; Ciara Burrows, 18, a graduate of Saltus Grammar School; and Ryan Robinson Perinchief, 17, a graduate of the Berkeley Institute, took part in the Heart of Europe Debate Tournament in the Czech Republic from July 10 until July 15.

The trio competed in ten debates, including three prepared rounds.

In the preliminary round, Bermuda won two of the three prepared debates and moved on to the quarter finals with seven other teams.

But the team then lost to South Africa, who went on to win the competition.

The Island was the first country from the Caribbean and Lower Americas region to compete in the Heart of Europe tournament, and it was the first time in more than a decade that Bermuda made it past the preliminary stages.

Ms Burrows said: “Bermuda was known as the friendliest team at the Heart of Europe tournament.

“Regardless of the result, we could be found talking, hugging or posing for pictures with the opposing team after an intense debate.”

Mr Robinson Perinchief praised other nations’ dedication to promoting debating in schools. He said: “Many of the countries, such as Singapore, have debate as a major class in school — they even have full-time positions for debate coaches.

“They recognise the importance of critical thinking, understanding international affairs, and being able to examine issues from both sides while developing charismatic ability.

“Team Bermuda certainly made a statement that although we are small, we will not shy away from the competition posed by the big players, such as Canada or Singapore.”

Ms Sutcliffe admitted she was “a bit anxious” as the youngest member of the squad “but my team was always right there to help me focus and get back on track”.

The team’s coach, Christianna Hiles, served as adjudicator for some of the tournament’s debates and has been invited to apply for the role of chief judge at next year’s competition.

The trip was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Bermuda Debate Society.
