Decent start for masters

DeGiulio competes in the 800 metres freestyle in Montreal

Bermuda are being represented by their largest swimming team, four men and six women, at the Fina Masters World Championships in Montreal, Canada, which started at the weekend.

This is the third time the Island has taken part at the championships where more than 6,000 athletes, including Olympians, from more than 50 countries are competing in pool swimming, open water swimming, water polo, synchronised swimming and diving.

Bermuda’s team, coached by Olympian Victor Ruberry, who is also competing, includes Nick Rowse, Paul DeGiulio, Gerhard Boonsta, Colleen Nelson, Sandra Dallas, Martina Olcheski-Bell, Lori Sommer, Trish Rowse and Rogers,

Only Nelson and Dallas have championship experience, having swum two years ago when the event was held in Riccone, Italy. Nelson also competed in Sweden in 2010 and San Francisco in 2006.

On day one of the competition, Rowse, 47, finished 22nd in the 800 metres freestyle 45-49 age group in a time of 10mn 23.44sec, while Deguilio, 54, came 24th in the 50-54 category in 10:53.16.

Rowse was back in the pool at the Aquatic Complex at Parc Jean Drapeau on Saint Helen’s Island on Monday, in the 100 freestyle 45-49, finishing 25th in 1:00.80. Boonstra, 46, placed 77th in the same category in 1:07.71.

In the 50-54 age group, DeGiulio came 85th in the 50-54 category in 1:08.59.

On day one of the women’s competition, Olcheski-Bell, 31, finished 27th in the 800 in the 30-34 category, finishing in 12:04.47.

She then competed in the women’s 100 freestyle on day two, but did not record a time. In the women’s breaststroke on day two, Olcheski-Bell also did not record a time.

Sommer, 53, came 30th in the 100 breaststroke in the 50-54 category, posting a time of 1:37.24. In the 65-69 category, Nelson finished 65th in 1:19.54. Dallas, 75, placed 10th in the 75-79 category in 2:29.96.

Nelson also finished fourth in the 100 freestyle in a time of 1:19.54.
